The All-New Pasha de Cartier Grille Launched at Watches and Wonders 2022

For those who are new to the watch, here’s a history lesson. The Pasha de Cartier was born in the year 1985 and was named after the Pasha El Glaoui of Marrakesh. The design is notable for its square inside of the circle and massive Arabic quarter-hour markers.

Calling this timepiece an oddball won’t be unjust at all. This square peg in Cartier’s line of uber luxurious timepieces is a watch that is built for experimentation. And this year for Watches and Wonders 2022 Geneva, the Maison is releasing an updated Pasha Grille.

Taking cues from a gridded Cartier watch from the 1930s, these new watches feature a removable grill (thanks to four tiny clasps) so you can wear a traditional Pasha when the mood strikes. That said, the grid is hand-polished so you might want to keep it on forever.

The first watch is available in 40 mm all-gold. The other two are available in jewellery versions of 30 mm and 35 mm. The smallest watch in the group, the 30 mm Pasha Grille, is fuelled-up by a quartz mechanism, while the other two models operate on 1847 MC automatic movements.

Getting Into The Details

The Pasha de Cartier in yellow gold comes in a 41 mm wide and 9.55 mm thick case. The case comes with a removable grille. The crown is set with a sapphire cabochon. In addition to this, the interchangeable QuickSwitch blue and dark grey leather straps make the timepiece quite interesting. The movement used in the watch is the 1847MC automatic movement.

The rose gold Pasha de Cartier comes in a 35 mm wide and 9.37 mm thick case. The removable grille is a constant. The bezel and grid are studded with 117 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The other rose gold Pasha de Cartier comes in a 30 mm wide and 8.22 mm thick case. The bezel and grid in this watch come fitted with 97 brilliant-cut diamonds instead of 117. The watch is powered by a Quartz movement.

Honest Opinion

How often do you see elements removed or rearranged on Swiss luxury watches for men and women? Nearly every day. However, it is not every day that a whole new component is added to a luxury timepiece for purely aesthetic reasons. You have to appreciate the fact that Cartier looked at the already ecstatic Pasha de Cartier watch and simply was like, “We need more.”

The 40 mm wide all-gold is definitely the best version, in my humble opinion. The dial size allows the grill to stand out without getting lost in the cobwebs of jewellery found on the other models. The fact that the grill is removable is actually great. Hence, those who are not interested in adding a windowpane to their timepiece can take the other road whenever they feel like it.
